SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21 -- THE OPENING RALLY and MARCH, at LAGUNA HONDA HOSPITAL

Gather at 12:30 PM, Rally starts at 1:30 PM March and ceremony to follow

Location: The hill next to the Forest Hill Muni Metro Station

By public transit from the East Bay: Take BART to San Francisco and transfer at any downtown BART station (Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, or Civic Center) to Muni Metro lines L, M, or N (outbound). Get out at the Forest Hill Station which is directly across the street from the Laguna Honda facility.

By public transit from the South Bay: Take BART to San Francisco and transfer at the Balboa Park BART station to Muni Metro lines K or M (outbound). Get out at the Forest Hill Station which is directly across the street from the Laguna Honda facility.

For driving or paratransit: 187 Magellan, San Francisco

(Come early, there will be a lot of people on BART and Muni!)

Opening this pivotal week will be a rally at Laguna Honda Hospital. Laguna Honda is the largest nursing home in this country. San Francisco is presently rebuilding this 1200-bed institution at enormous cost instead of providing ALTERNATIVE COMMUNITY SERVICES AND HOUSING for people with disabilities!

Laguna Honda Hospital is a symbol of what's wrong with long term care policy: a warped system that's biased toward institutions instead of home care and other community options. In the Olmstead decision, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the right of people with disabilities, including seniors, to live in the community with the services they need, rather than being forced to live in institutions. OTHER STATES ARE IMPLEMENTING THE OLMSTEAD DECISION -- WHY NOT CALIFORNIA?
